I had been gone for seven months, hauling emergency supplies for FEMA through flood zones and mud-caked backroads, living out of a cab that smelled like stale coffee and diesel. I expected a mess. I expected the grass to be long and the mail to be piled up. I didn’t expect the house to feel like a stranger lived there.
