My phone was sitting right beside my plate on the kitchen island, lit up with the blue glow of another message I was about to send, when I heard her voice coming through the bedroom door. She wasn’t talking to the baby. She wasn’t talking to me. She was reading my words out loud to someone else, and that was the exact second I realized I had walked right off a cliff without looking down.
