I expected the grass to be long and the mail to be piled up. I didn’t expect the house to feel like a stranger lived there.
  • The staples in my abdomen felt like a row of hot needles every time I breathed too deep. It had been five hours since the doctors pulled Jonah out of me, and I was still waiting for the fog of the anesthesia to lift. Travis had been there for the birth. He held my hand. He cried those big, messy tears that make you think you’re in a partnership that can survive anything. He signed the birth certificate with a blue ballpoint pen he fished out of his own pocket, then kissed my forehead and promised he was just heading down to Lot C to grab the overnight bag from the trunk of our sedan.
