She was sitting across from me with one elbow on the table, wearing a cream-colored dress that probably cost more than my monthly grocery budget. “Five thousand three hundred dollars,” I said. Courtney smiled. “You can read. Congratulations.” Preston chuckled beside her. Mom covered her mouth, but not before I saw her smile. Dad didn’t. He was still staring at me like someone had dropped him into the middle of a play without giving him the script. “Rosie,” he said slowly, “what is going on?” Courtney answered before I could. “Nothing, Dad.
